OTTAWA - Dave Cameron used to deal with troubled youth. Now he will be dealing with a troubled NHL team.Cameron, named Ottawa Senators head coach Monday after the firing of Paul MacLean, faces the challenging task of getting the struggling team back in playoff contention. At 11-11-5 the Senators sit four points out of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.Prior to coaching, Cameron worked in Prince Edward Island with troubled youth and as a high school guidance councillor, but the draw to hockey was too much for the former player who logged 168 games in the NHL.Cameron has coached in the Ontario Hockey League and American Hockey League and has served as head coach for Canadas world junior team, but always aspired to be an NHL head coach.Once I got in for a period of time and the passion grew, I knew I wanted to be an NHL coach, but I also knew dont be in a rush to get there because youre probably going to get one kick at the cat and if youre not ready when you get there and you get fired then youre probably done, said Cameron. I aspired for it for a long time. I was never in a panic or rush or a timeframe on it.Cameron believes hes now ready for the job.I know at the end of the day youre as good as your players and a lot of times youre as good as your goaltending, he said. Thats the thing. Im all about team. At the end of the day, the best team wins championships.I challenge my players with everything I do and say. Every decision we make is in the best interests of the team and they have the right at any time that if they dont believe in what were doing as a staff and as a team they can come in and by all means well talk about it.This is Camerons first opportunity as an NHL head coach, and the 56-year-old admitted it was somewhat bittersweet considering it came at his friends expense. He had worked as MacLeans assistant for the past four years.Cameron knows change wont happen overnight, but says part of the focus will be on the teams defensive play. Through 27 games, Ottawa has given up the second-most shots in the league behind only the Buffalo Sabres. When asked how quickly he could implement change, Cameron was honest.I dont know. Thats a tough one, he said. I firmly believe when a team is in turmoil, and we are because theres been a change, that its become too complicated. Its not complicated. Its a simple game. My job is to simplify it. The sooner we can simplify it the faster we change.Reaction from players was as expected. Many anticipated some form of change to take place considering the team had won just four of its last 15 games.Unfortunately thats what happens when the team is not winning and playing as good as were expected, said captain Erik Karlsson. Its never any fun, but it is what it is and we have to move forward as a group and we have to be better or things will change there too and we know that. Its part of the business. I dont think (Monday) was a fun day for anyone.MacLean addressed the media Tuesday afternoon and said everything he did was with the intention of getting the team into the playoffs. That was what I tried to establish here. To play in June, your best players have to be your best players. I pushed them to be, he said. MacLean said before a game against Pittsburgh on Saturday that Im just scared to death every day who we are playing and sometimes Im scared to death of who Im playing. Senators GM Bryan Murray said at a press conference Monday that he didnt appreciate the comment.I thought wed lost four games in a row, I didnt think that wed lost our sense of humour, MacLean said when asked if he regretted the quip. Part of MacLeans downfall was attributed to a lack of communication, but he disputed that claim.I thought my door was open all the time, said MacLean. Communication is a two-way street. You have to have someone that talks and someone that wants to listen. I was always prepared to listen. Listening and patience is one of my strengths. I felt we communicated what the players needed to hear. We didnt win enough games.MacLean says he leaves Ottawa a better coach and will be better prepared for his next opportunity.Players dont anticipate a massive overhaul, but do expect a renewed sense of energy and optimism. It will take some time to sink in, said forward Bobby Ryan. Its not like (MacLean) left the room and all of sudden we were rejoicing or anything like that. Somebody lost their job and we take ownership of that, but at the same time its a business and youve got to move forward.I thought the guys did a good job of shelving it when we got on the ice and having a good practice still, but that being said you have to have fun and Bryan (Murray) was right in that regard. The morale in the room was low and thats because we were losing and thats not on Paul to take the morale from us, he wasnt doing that. We were creating bad morale on us on our own. When youre losing thats just natural, thats not Pauls fault. The players and Cameron are eager to get to work and their first test will be a difficult one as they take on the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night in Ottawa. No easy games, said Cameron. Ive always been of the theory that when your team is in a slump the only way it breaks it out is if it beats a really good team. Ive always taken that approach. A win is a win and were going to have our hands full. Dru Samia Youth Jersey . -- After a year spent travelling the world, Brooks Koepka suddenly is in a position to play a lot more golf at home. He has returned to his Bay Area comfort zone, far from South Florida and his short-lived, tumultuous tenure with the Dolphins. Now, hes here to stay. Martin is the newest member of the San Francisco 49ers, and hes thrilled for a fresh start to keep playing football. And for anyone who questions why the offensive lineman couldnt tough things out through a bullying scandal in Miami, hes unconcerned. "You could say this or that could have gone differently. Hindsight is 20-20," Martin said Thursday upon passing a physical. "My focus is 100 per cent on the future, moving forward." In recent months, Martin has learned to ignore all the negative chatter and surround himself with those who have been so supportive along the way. Already, starting 49ers offensive linemen Joe Staley and Anthony Davis have reached out. "I can tell already that Im going to get along just great with those guys," Martin said. "Ive felt a warm welcome from the entire 49ers community, fan base, coaching staff, everybody. Im just looking forward to the future and getting back to playing football." Martins trade from the Dolphins to the Niners became official Thursday. It reunites him with his college coach, Jim Harbaugh. The teams first announced the move Tuesday night for Martin, who left the Dolphins last fall after accusing teammate Richie Incognito of bullying in a scandal that overshadowed the franchises 8-8 season. An investigation for the NFL determined last month that Incognito and two other offensive linemen engaged in persistent harassment of Martin, another offensive lineman and an assistant trainer. After Martins departure from the Dolphins in late October, he underwent counselling for emotional issues. Incognito was suspended for the final eight games. "Any time we acquire a player we give him a clean slate, along with every opportunity to demonstrate his value to our organization, both on the field and in the community," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said. "It will be no different in Jonathans case. As a former Stanford student-athlete, we are very familiar with Jonathan and look forward to working with him." Harbaugh has supported Martin all along, from his early college days at Stanford to the offensive linemans departure from the Dolphins, and even in a formal NFL investigation into the situation in Miami. Harbaugh spoke publicly about Martin in November and referred to him as a &"personal friend.dddddddddddd" "Hes a stand-up guy. It means a lot when somebody with that much credibility has your back," Martin said. "His enthusiasm is infectious. You can see it at every level of the organization. It rubs off on everybody. Just to be around a winning atmosphere, a coach thats focused on winning, its really the best situation I could have asked for." Now, these two will begin the process of getting Martin up to speed in a hurry this off-season. Harbaugh has said hes not concerned because it should be a smooth transition. Martin already knows many of the coaches who came from Stanford when Harbaugh was hired in January 2011. Harbaugh has credited Martin for being a "very intelligent football player" who has familiarity with the Niners system. Martin noted he never considered retiring, saying: "That didnt even cross my mind at any point. Im a football player, Ive been a football player my whole life." "The way Im approaching it, I have to earn my spot on this team, Im a new guy in the locker room," Martin said. "Its a blank slate for me. Im looking forward to revitalizing my career, getting back to playing. I want to do whatever I can to contribute to this O-line. Its one of the best O-lines in football already." The 24-year-old Martin wasnt expected to return to Miami, and owner Stephen Ross made it known in January that the 2012 second-round pick would likely be gone. The investigation found a pattern of harassment on the Dolphins, with Martin the primary target of vicious taunts and racist insults that occurred almost daily. The report said teammates threatened to rape Martins sister, called him a long list of slurs and bullied him for not being "black enough." Martin is black and Incognito is white. Now, Martin can truly move forward in a new jersey, and perhaps in a new number — even in a new stadium. The 49ers will play their first season in Levis Stadium at team headquarters this year. Martin said they have always had a great relationship, from the days Harbaugh recruited him to Stanford and coached him for three years with the Cardinal. "The goal for this transaction is a win-win," Harbaugh said. Martin, too, considers this a perfect fit, with the opportunity to chase a championship an added bonus. "Absolutely," Martin said. "I think it worked out great, once again playing for Coach Harbaugh, once again in the Bay Area. Playing for a winning franchise, a team thats had a lot of recent success. Hopefully Ill be able to contribute to further success with this team." ' ' '
