EUGENE, Ore. -- Trailing Michigan State 27-18 in the third quarter and facing a third-and-10, Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota found himself confronting a decision while on the run: Either pitch the ball to freshman Royce Freeman, or try a keeper. Mariota, who is as adept with his feet as he is with his arm, decided on the flip to Freeman for the first down, and the No. 3 Ducks would go on to score the first of four unanswered touchdowns for a 46-27 victory Saturday night over the No. 7 Spartans. Afterward, many of the Ducks -- and even the Spartans -- pointed to that play as the pivotal moment of the game, which was billed as the premier nonconference matchup of the season. "I was looking for him to run it," said a surprised Freeman, who had a pair of rushing touchdowns in the victory. "I was going to block for him." Mariota finished with 318 yards passing and three touchdowns, solidifying his position as an early Heisman favourite. He now has 69 touchdown passes for his career, an Oregon record. Redshirt freshman Devon Allen had three catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns for the Ducks. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the defending Big Ten- and Rose Bowl-champion Spartans, who went 13-1 last season. Connor Cook threw for 343 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. "I just tried to keep a calm mindset. I tried not to get caught up in the game, caught up in the moment at all," Cook said. "They just made more plays than us. We had some opportunities on offence and I needed to grasp them and I didnt." The Spartans had the second-ranked defence in the nation last year, allowing opponents an average of just over 252 yards per game. But the high-flying Oregon offence -- combined with temperatures approaching 100 degrees -- appeared to wear on Michigan State as the game went on. The two teams both went three-and-out on their opening series and it appeared that defences would rule the day. The Spartans reached Oregon territory midway through the quarter, but on third-and-10 on the 38, Erick Dargan intercepted Cook and ran it back 36 yards. The Ducks capped the drive when Thomas Tyner barrelled over the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown, and Oregon added the conversion for an 8-0 lead. Matt Wogans 28-yard field goal pushed the Ducks lead to 11-0. But Michigan State answered with an impressive drive topped by Jeremy Langfords 16-yard scoring dash. Mariota hit Allen with a 70-yard touchdown pass to give the Ducks an 18-7 lead with 10:12 to go in the half. Allen, the NCAAs reigning 110-meter hurdles champion, shook off strong safety RJ Williamson before sprinting in for the score. The scoring pushed Mariota past Darron Thomas (66) on Oregons all-time list. Mariota has thrown at least one touchdown in each of the 28 games hes played at Oregon. Michael Geiger kicked a 34-yard field goal and Cook added a 7-yard touchdown pass to Tony Lippett with 2:26 left before the break to pull the Spartans within a point. Michigan State took a 24-18 lead with 18 seconds to go when Josiah Price leaped to grab Cooks 7-yard TD pass into the end zone. The Ducks were hurt early in the first half when junior offensive lineman Andre Yruretagoyena was carted off the field with what appeared to be a right leg injury. Michigan State padded its lead with Geigers 42-year-old field goal, but Mariota found Allen with another touchdown pass, this time from 24 yards out, to cut the Spartans lead to 27-25. It was earlier on that series that Mariota made the momentum-changing pitch to Freeman for 17 yards. "Once I saw Royce five, 10 yards down the field, I just thought he could get there faster than I could," Mariota said. Even Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio pointed to the play as the moment the game shifted. "We had to stop the momentum and we had him dead to right and he got out. We had him. I even said, Hes sacked." Dantonio said. "But again, you have to credit him, thats why hes the player he is." BRISTOL, Conn. -- Police believe former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez was in an SUV when someone inside shot two people to death in Boston in 2012, according to a search warrant filed in Connecticut. The warrant does not indicate who investigators believe pulled the trigger or suggest a motive in the shooting of Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu and Safiro Teixeira Furtado in Bostons South End. No charges have been filed in the case. An attorney for Hernandez did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment Wednesday. Hernandez came under scrutiny in the shooting following his arrest in the slaying of Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional football player whose body was found June 17 near Hernandezs North Attleborough, Mass., home. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to murder in that case. In searching a home of Hernandezs uncle in Bristol, Conn., in June, police found the SUV wanted in the 2012 shooting in Boston. The new search warrant, first reported by The Hartford Courant, was filed in Bristol Superior Court and dated Dec. 11. It sought recordings of phone calls made by a Hernandez associate, Alexander Bradley, while Bradley was jailed in Hartford in October for failing to appear before a Massachusetts grand jury investigating the 2012 shooting. Bradley has alleged in a pending lawsuit in Florida that Hernandez shot him in the face after they argued outside a Miami club in February 2013. The search warrant filed by Bristol police provides some of the first details of Hernandezs alleged link to the Boston shooting. Surveillance camera recordings showed Hernandez and Bradley going into the Boston nightclub Cure at about 12:30 a.m. on July 16, 2012, shortly after the shooting victims went into the club, according to the warrant. Hernandezs movements inside the club werent recorded, but police said Hernandez quickly downed two drinks and thaat he and Bradley left after about 10 minutes.dddddddddddd Surveillance video then showed Hernandez driving a Toyota 4Runner SUV out of a nearby parking garage with Bradley as a passenger, police said. The footage shows the victims leaving the club at about 2:10 a.m., and Hernandezs SUV passing by them twice as they walked to a parking garage to get their car, the warrant says. The shooting wasnt recorded by any cameras. A third man who was shot in the car but survived, Aquilino Freire, told police an SUV pulled up next to them while they were stopped at a traffic light, and he saw someone in the SUVs back seat laughing, the warrant says. Then, several gunshots were fired from the rear passenger seat into the car, Freire told police. Two other people in the car ran away, Freire said. A witness in another car told investigators that he saw an SUV with Rhode Island license plates run a red light, stop next to the victims car and he heard six gunshots. He described the SUV driver as a light-skinned Hispanic man with short dark hair. Another witness gave authorities the same description of the driver and said there was a passenger with hair that was either braided or had beads in it. The witness wasnt sure if the passenger was a man or woman. Hernandez has short dark hair, as does Bradley, according to police booking photos. When Bradley was being detained at the Hartford Correctional Center, he was informed that all phone calls by prisoners are subject to monitoring. An announcement repeated randomly during the phone calls tells both people on the call that it is being recorded, the warrant says. A correctional officer who was monitoring Bradleys calls alerted Bristol police that he believed Bradley discussed details of the Boston shooting in calls to people whom police did not identify.
