ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Los Angeles Angels can almost taste it now. Jered Weaver earned his AL-leading 17th win, Mike Trout homered twice, and the AL West leaders reduced their magic number for clinching the division title to four with a 5-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday night. Any combination of Angels victories and Seattle Mariners losses totalling four will give Los Angeles its sixth division title under manager Mike Scioscia and first since 2009, when the team won its third in a row. The Angels extended their winning streak to 10 games — one off the franchise record set in 1964 — improving to a major league-best 93-55. They had scored at least seven runs in each of their previous eight contests, tying a club record set in 1979. "The offence is clicking and the pitching staffs been unbelievable," Trout said. "We give them a comfortable lead and they go out there and pitch. Thats probably the best Ive seen Weave in a while. I see him working hard every day, trying to get that velocity back, and it came back today for sure." This was Weavers 32nd start this season — and only the third in which Trout homered. The All-Star centre fielder, who has a career-high 34 home runs, also did it on opening night at home against Seattles Felix Hernandez, and on Aug. 24 at Oakland against reliever Jesse Chavez. "Weve kind of given him a hard time about that. It seems like he always hit home runs when Im not pitching," Weaver said with a grin. "But regardless of the home runs, hes done more than enough in the games that Ive pitched. Thats for sure. "Its no surprise what hes done so far," he added. "I mean, weve seen what hes done the last few years at such a young age. Hes our guy. Obviously, theres some great guys around him as well, but hes taken the league by storm and hes maintaining it. So nothing he does surprises me anymore." Weaver (17-8) allowed a run and four hits through seven innings with a season-high 12 strikeouts, his 13th career double-digit game. The three-time All-Star is 10-2 with a 3.35 ERA over his last 17 starts. "Year after year, weve seen Weave come out and be the lead dog," manager Mike Scioscia said. "Tonight his stuff was exceptional. I dont know if Ive seen Weave throw like this for about five years. He had great life on his fastball. That was one of the best games hes pitched in a long time." Huston Street pitched for the first time since Sept. 6, working a scoreless ninth for his 14th save after missing five games with a hamstring problem. Scott Feldman (8-11) allowed two runs and eight hits in six innings for Houston. Jose Altuve had two hits including an RBI double, and is six hits away from Craig Biggios 1998 franchise record of 210. Trout hit an opposite-field drive to right-centre in the first inning, then homered over the trees in centre leading off the third for his third career multihomer game. "Hes a great player and got me a couple times there," Feldman said. "It turned out to be enough with the way Weaver was throwing. He seemed was on his game pretty well the whole night, and I obviously gave those up two home runs. So that was the game right there." COULD HAPPEN Weaver and the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw — who is in a four-way tie for the most wins in the NL — have a chance to pull off a rare feat. Only six times since 1929 have two pitchers from the same market led their respective leagues in victories during the same season. The last time it happened was 1985, when the Yankees Ron Guidry won 22 games and the Mets Dwight Gooden won 24. TRAINERS ROOM Astros: OF George Springer (left quadriceps strain) became the sixth player on the team to miss at least 50 games because of a single injury. Reliever Josh Zeid will reach that figure four games from now. He is out for the rest of the season because of operations on both feet. Angels: LF Josh Hamilton missed his ninth consecutive game because of a sore right shoulder. No. 5 hitter Howie Kendrick has started in the cleanup spot for Hamilton during this entire stretch, going 20 for 40 with two homers and 13 RBIs. UP NEXT Astros: Dallas Keuchel (10-9, 3.06 ERA) is 5-16 with a 4.93 ERA in 32 career starts after the All-Star break, compared to 14-11 with a 3.67 ERA in 33 starts before the break. He leads the AL with five complete games this season, one fewer than major league leader Clayton Kershaw, and he has the best ground ball-to-flyball ratio in the majors (3.51). Angels: Hector Santiago (5-7, 3.38 ERA) is 5-0 with a 2.65 ERA in his last 14 appearances, including 12 starts. Two of those victories came in relief. The Packers, Lions and Bears were a combined 35-15 and as long as Jay Cutler can say healthy, all three could make the playoffs in 2012.DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers arent just winning games this week. They are making history. One night after Rajai Davis hit Detroits first game-ending grand slam in 10 years, Rick Porcello significantly raised the bar. In a 3-0 win over Oakland, Porcello became just the fourth pitcher in franchise history to throw a shutout without walking or striking out a batter, and the first since Dizzy Trout in 1944. Porcello was slightly disappointed by his 95-pitch outing, even after learning how rare it was. "In the last couple innings, I was hoping Id get at least one strikeout," he said. "I didnt want to go out there and put up a zero. Still, with a game like this, Im certainly not going to trade it in for anything." Porcello recorded 17 groundball outs and 10 in the air while becoming the first major-leaguer to accomplish the feat since Baltimores Jeff Ballard on Aug. 21, 1989. Porcello was eight months old when Ballard did it against Milwaukee. "To be honest, it was pretty boring out there," said Torii Hunter, who didnt record an out in right field. "But that just shows you how great he was tonight. He was throwing that sinker right down the middle, and it was dropping out of the strike zone, and they were just beating it into the ground." The As got three singles and a double, and only got one runner to third base. "Our guys were swinging at strikes, but everything was moving," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "Hes got a good sinker and a good change-up, and now hes mixing in a good breaking ball to keep you off balance. Thats just a very well-pitched game by him." Porcellos night might have been historic, but it certainly didnt come out of the blue. He pitched his first career shutout in his previous start, beating the Rangers on June 26, and pitched six shutout innings against Cleveland on June 20. "I dont want to jinx it," he joked when asked about his shutout streak. "All I know is that Im throwing the ball really well right now, Im making consistent pitches when I need them, and my defence is helping me out. Im also getting some good breaks, which every pitcher needs." Porcello (11-4) only had one career complete game before this stretch, but is now the first Tigers pitcher since Jack Morris to throw back-to-bback shutouts.dddddddddddd Morris threw three in a row in July, 1986. "Obviously, Rick is throwing the ball extremely well right now," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He had a great curveball and changeup tonight, and the sinker was better than that. It makes my job a lot easier when the starter has only thrown 88 pitches through eight innings." Brad Mills (1-1) took the loss for Oakland, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks in six-plus innings. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Miguel Cabrera walked, took third on J.D. Martinezs double and scored on a groundout by Hunter. Oakland, in the meantime, was becoming the latest team to struggle for answers against Porcello, managing only two hits in the first six innings. Martinez, starting for the second straight night while Victor Martinez deals with soreness in his left side, made it 3-0 with a two-run homer in the sixth. After moving into the everyday lineup in early June, J.D. Martinez is hitting .376 with seven homers and 20 RBIs in 19 games. "I threw him a change, and I think he was sitting on it," Mills said. "I certainly didnt locate it where I wanted it." After that, the only suspense was if Porcello could finish off the shutout, and do it with a double-digit pitch count. He accomplished both, becoming the first Tigers pitcher to throw a shutout in under 100 pitches since Armando Galarraga in 2010. That was the game Galarraga had to face an extra hitter after first base umpire Jim Joyce blew the call on what should have been the last out in a perfect game. NOTES: Victor Martinez took batting practice before the game, and told Ausmus that he could play, but Ausmus decided to rest him for another day. ... Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos took full advantage of his position in Detroits shifted defence, picking up a pair of 5-3 assists while playing in short right field. ... Oakland C Derek Norris is getting closer to returning from a sore back, and could play in Wednesdays series finale. ... The time of the game was 2:13, meaning that a 7:08 start ended less than 10 minutes after sunset. ... As OF Yoenis Cespedes sat out after leaving Mondays game with a cramp in his hamstring, but Melvin said he will be available on Wednesday. ' ' '
