The Toronto Maple Leafs did not play their best game in the opener of a home-and-home series against the rival Detroit Red Wings, but the Leafs have a chance to rebound in tonights rematch in the Motor City. Toronto hosted the Red Wings on Friday and dropped a 4-1 decision at Air Canada Centre. The setback halted the Leafs two-game winning streak, while Detroit snapped a two-game slide of its own with the victory. Johan Franzen scored twice and Henrik Zetterberg had four assists to lead the Red Wings in Fridays encounter. Zetterberg entered the game with just one assist on the season before breaking out with a four-point night against the Leafs. (Zetterberg) is the leader of our team and we expect him to be good, Detroit head coach Mike Babcock said. When hes not, we expect him to respond, and he did tonight. Gustav Nyquist continued his quick start to the season, scoring in his fourth straight game to begin 2014-15. He has four goals and one assist. Justin Abdelkader netted the other goal for Detroit, while Jimmy Howard made 23 saves in the win. Jonas Gustavsson will see his first action of the season on Saturday, as Howards backup expects to face his former team for the first time. Gustavsson spent three seasons with the Maple Leafs from 2009-10 to 2011-12. Red Wings placed goaltender Jimmy Howard on the 48-hour injured reserve with a sore groin. General manager Ken Holland made the announcement Saturday afternoon. Franzen, meanwhile, is questionable for the home-and-home finale after leaving Fridays tilt midway through the second period. The Swedish forward was unable to return after suffering leg spasms, but theres a chance he could be play tonight. Mike Santorelli supplied Torontos lone goal and James Reimer allowed all four goals on 35 shots in defeat. Extremely disappointed, Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle said. We played too much on our heels in the defensive zone. Jonathan Bernier will likely start in net for the Leafs tonight. He is 2-2-1 with a 3.06 goals against average in seven career games against Detroit. The Leafs will be without forward Brandon Kozun after the rookie suffered a lower-body injury in the second period of Fridays contest. Matt Frattin will replace Kozun in the lineup tonight. Detroits victory on Friday gives the club a three-game winning streak in this series. The Red Wings also have won four of five and five of the last seven meetings in this series. Although the Maple Leafs posted a victory in last seasons Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium, the Red Wings have claimed two in a row and four of the last five encounters at Joe Louis Arena. The Leafs won for the second time in three games by downing lowly Buffalo on Tuesday. Jonathan Bernier only needed to stop 10 shots to post a shutout against the Sabres, while Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel each had a goal and an assist en route to a 4-0 home win. The 10 shots allowed set a Maple Leafs record for fewest shots yielded in a game. James van Riemsdyk and Jake Gardiner also scored and Morgan Rielly supplied two helpers for the Maple Leafs, who will try to win consecutive games tonight for the second time this season. Our expectation is to carry this on to the next one, Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle said of the win. Tonight, everything fell our way and well take it because we were in drastic need of a performance at home. While the Leafs have struggled to a 2-4-0 record at home, they are unbeaten in regulation on the road, going 2-0-1 as the guest. Columbus has been handed three straight regulation setbacks and lost each of its last two outings by 5-2 margins. The Blue Jackets are 4-5-0 this season, and the slow start has more than a little to with the clubs inability to stay healthy. The Blue Jackets have been beset by injuries in the first month of the season, and two more names were added to the list on Wednesday as defenseman James Wisniewski and center Mark Letestu were both placed on injured reserve. Wisniewski is expected to be sidelined for 1-to-2 weeks with a broken finger he suffered in Tuesdays game against Ottawa. Letestu could be out for a month with a groin injury he sustained against the Senators. Goaltender Serggei Bobrovsky is also out with a broken finger, while forwards Artem Anisimov (head), Matt Calvert (upper body) and Nick Foligno (stinger) have also been hurt since last weekend.dddddddddddd Brandon Dubinsky, Nathan Horton and Boone Jenner have yet to play this season because of injuries. Foligno, however, could play tonight after missing Tuesdays loss to Ottawa. After losing 5-2 in Los Angeles on Sunday, Columbus returned home and fell to the Senators by the same margin. The score was tied at 2-2 after 40 minutes, but Ottawa scored three unanswered goals in the third to notch the victory. We just ran out of gas, Blue Jackets forward Adam Cracknell said. We lost some guys and made some mistakes. David Savard and Cam Atkinson each netted goals in the loss, while Curtis McElhinney made 29 saves in place of an injured Bobrovsky. McElhinney expects to start again tonight with Anton Forsberg serving as the backup. Columbus is 2-2-0 at home this season and has two wins in five all-time meetings with Toronto at Nationwide Arena. The Blue Jackets have taken three in a row and four of the past five meetings overall.
