MARCOUSSIS, France -- Canada remained undefeated at the 2014 IRB Womens Rugby World Cup after soundly defeating Samoa 42-7 on Tuesday. Brittany Waters scored two of Canadas six tries from the backline. Mandy Marchak, Elissa Alarie, Stephanie Bernier and Andrea Burk had the others as Canada earned a bonus point in the standings by scoring at least four tries. Magali Harvey, the leading scorer so far in France, converted five of the tries, with Burk capping the scoring by successfully converting her own. "Im happy about my performance today and scoring two tries, but my teams effort was what set the platform for them and I think the team effort is whats most important," Waters said. "I think its going to be a great game against England on Saturday. I think we improved on our first game and if we can continue to be strong in the breakdown against England we can be successful." Canada improved to 2-0 and is tied with England for first place in Pool A with 10 points. England and Canada meet Saturday. The three pool winners plus the top second-place team advance to the quarter-finals. "We reached our goal of securing a bonus point against a very strong and physical Samoan team, and Im proud of their effort and attitude today," said Canada coach Francois Ratier. "Now were going to de-brief from todays game and figure out exactly where we excelled and where we need to improve for our final pool game against England." Marchak opened the scoring in the 11th minute, touching down for a try after a strong run through two defenders. Harvey added the conversion to put Canada up 7-0. On the ensuing restart, a Samoan forward was shown a yellow card for an infringement in the ruck. Shortly after, Marchak made a break to get Canada inside Samoan territory and Canada eventually scored on Waters first try of the game. With Samoa back to a full strength, Canada continued to press on and were awarded with another try shortly after from fullback Alarie, who scooped up a loose ball and ran 30 metres over the try line. Harveys third conversion of the game increased the lead to 21-0. Alarie denied a late Samoan try with a tackle on the final play of the first half. Canada struck again with a try early in the second half. Burk started the play off with a 60 metre run before being tackled and the ball found its way to Bernier, who finished off the score. Harveys conversion put Canada up 28-0. Samoa got on the board at the 54th minute mark when replacement Ginia Muavae broke through Canadas defence. "I think I obviously have a lot to learn and I went 1,024 days without playing football and played one year at Pitt. I think I have a lot to improve. Questionable Calls: If a deep quarterback draft, at least when it comes to prospects, it might have been more prudent for the Texans to address the position sooner with a more NFL-ready prospect. At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds Bortles brings prototypical size to the table and many have compared him to Ben Roethlisberger, although it remains to seen if he shows the same kind if innate escapeability as "Big Ben." With Justin Blackmon suspended moving forward Jags GM David Caldwell added a pair of receivers for Bortles in the second round, USCs Marqise Lee and Penn States Allen Robinson. The third round brought interior offensive line help with Miami offensive guard Brandon Linder, a steady, if unspectacular prospect. Best Value Pick: Fourth-round cornerback Aaron Colvin of Oklahoma was likely going to be a Day 2 pick at worst if he didnt suffer a knee injury before the Senior Bowl. Jacksonville will have to redshirt him for a year but may have found a difference maker if he rehabs well. Questionable Calls: There is just no way you can consider Bortles one of the three best prospects in the is draft so there is no question that Jacksonville overreached a bit. The Jags did re-sign Chad Henne as a bridge and an insurance policy in the offseason, meaning they could have bypassed the position at No. 3 overall and looked for the answer in the second round with the 39th overall selection. Summary: Bortles future will not only define this draft for Jacksonville, it will also define the fates of both Caldwell and head coach Gus Bradley in the Sunshine State. Running back was a need for the Titans because the team moved on from Chris Johnson in the offseason and Washingtons Bishop Sankey will have every opportunity to become the bell cow. The second-round pick has a lot of Emmitt Smith qualities in that he is an all-around volume back who does everything pretty well. Best Value Pick: Tennessee wanted some competition for Jake Locker and they got it in the sixth round with former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger, who has tremendous size and perhaps the best arm strength in this draft. A diluted urine sample at the scouting combine and some injury concerns pushed Mettenberger down the board. Questionable Calls: Linebacker Avery Williamson, the Titans fifth-round pick out of Kentucky, lacks the speed and athletic ability to be anything more than a two-down run stuffer. Summary: The Titans sandwiched this draft with Lewan, a very good choice, and Mettenberger, a potential steal. In between it was largely by the numbers, run-of-the-mill stuff.
